15 Sept 2011. A team from Hayle in Bloom took a coach up to the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay for the 2011 South West in Bloom Award Presentations.

The morning focused on the 'In Your Neighbourhood' awards and Hayle did very well. There are five levels: Establishing, Improving, Developing, Thriving and Outstanding. Here are the results:

Bob Lloyd's Field Developing
Library Wildlife Garden Developing
Adopt-a-Plot Thriving
Heather Lane Nursery Thriving
Allotments on Lethlean Lane Thriving
King George V Memorial Walk Outstanding
This is an amazing result, especially the allotments that were only opened in March! Congratulations.

Of course, our attention was focused on how well we had done in the main competition. This year we moved up from the SWTA Cup to the Preece Cup. We had won the SWTA Cup four years in a row!

In the higher group we also had more competition:

  • Midsomer Norton
  • Glastonbury
  • Sidmouth
  • Sodbury
  • Hayle

Firstly it was announced that we had won GOLD! However, four of the entrants had won Gold so it came down to who had the most points in a very close race.

This year it went to Sidmouth and, while we a little disappointed, we were still delighted to keep our unbroken record in recent years of winning Gold - particularly in a year of cutbacks. Well done to all.

15 Sept 2011. Our webmaster and his extensive team of web technical and editorial personnel were delighted to receive a cup for the Best Website. This was the Barry Cruse Trophy which is a discretionary award by the judges.
22 July 2011. The Town Clerk has sent the following letter to Hayle in Bloom's chair, Margaret Tanner:

Dear Margaret

Blooming Hayle Event

The ‘Blooming Hayle’ event held on the King George V Memorial Walk on 26 June 2011 was discussed at the meeting of the full Council held on 7 July 2011. The Council was delighted at the success of the event with many hundreds, if not thousands, of people enjoying the stalls, excellent weather and beautiful setting provided by the Memorial Walk and its associated gardens. It was a truly superb celebration of Hayle and its people and accordingly it was resolved to commend Hayle in Bloom for the event. I would ask that you pass on the Council’s thanks to all those involved and I sincerely hope that its success can be repeated in the coming years.

20 July 2011. The South West in Bloom Presentation Day, when we will hear how we did in the judging, is on Thursday, 15th September at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay. There will be a fee, which includes lunch. I am not sure what it is this year, but I think it was £15 last year.

Margaret will be organising a bus and seats wil be on a first come, first served basis. Please let her know if you need a seat by calling 756772.

14 July 2011. Beautiful weather accompanied the judges on their annual tour. Things were looking great and everyone was in good spirits. It ended wonderfully with a lovely lunch provided by Nick Reynolds at Paradis Park. Great work, everyone.

11 July 2011. We have all been busy bees getting ready for the visit by our judges Martin Abrahams (Newton Abbot, Devon) and Shaun Cregan (Taunton, Somerset) on Thursday. Everywhere is looking lovely and the weather has been delightful - and looks ok for Thursday too.
26 June 2011. Hayle in Bloom's 'Blooming Hayle' event was a huge success with thousands of people enjoying the stalls and entertainment along King George V Memorial Walk - in a car-free environment.
Hayle Town Band, Hayle Samba, Praze Hayle Male Choir, Hayle St. Piran Singers, Hayle Gig Racing Team, Hayle Surf Life Saving Club and the Carnkie Clog Dancers provided entertainment all afternoon long. And the place was spotless at the end of the event!

14 June 2011. The Allotments in Phillack were opened in March and they already look fantastic. There is more information on the Allotment Society here.
5 June 2011. The Weeding Party went extremely well with over 20 weeders and 30 bags full of weed. The Memorial Walk is looking a lot better in preparation for our exciting Blooming Hayle event on the 26th of June.

10 May 2011. Hayle is starting 2011 well by being one of ten winners of the Planting Places Awards 2011.

The awards celebrate top examples of greenspace from across the South West of England. They recognise the huge array of benefits that these spaces – and the hard-working people who look after them – have in supporting healthy, sustainable communities.

You can read the nice things they said about us at: Planting Places

02 April 2011. Hayle in Bloom will be holding a Celebration on the King George V Memorial Walk on Sunday, 26 June from 2-5pm.

The road will be closed and there will be stalls, food, fun and music.

17 March 2011. Headmaster, David May, and some of his pupils from Bodriggy School visited the King George V Memorial Walk to be introduced to their 2011 Adopt-a-Plot. Morrab Gardens head gardener Chris was on hand to help them construct a 'Beast Mansion' explaining the optimum habitat for a wide variety of important and useful garden bugs.
